Travel Tuesday: Palm Beach/Miami, Florida

My husband and I celebrated our 10 year anniversary by jetting down to Palm Beach, Florida and Miami Beach. It was a perfect getaway far enough from home (Georgia) to feel special for the occasion, yet not too far that we couldn’t get back quickly if there was an emergency. Yay for staying in the same time zone too! Africa would have been the ultimate destination, but we found a super cool replacement activity while we were in Miami. {More on that later…}
We chose to stay at The Breakers in Palm Beach for its iconic style and luxury. The history and architecture of this place is breathtaking. When we drove through the main gate and through the palm tree lined driveway, I was instantly transported to the playground of the elegant socialites of the 1920’s.

IMG_4704We booked a Deluxe Guest Room with a Resort View. (It was the most affordable!) We checked in on a Tuesday for two nights, so it was a quick in and out stay. We were blown away at the generosity of the resort when they upgraded our reservation to the super exclusive boutique hotel WITHIN The Breakers called “The Flagler Club.” The front desk upgraded us before they even knew it was our anniversary!

In addition to the included breakfast buffet, light fare food offerings for lunch in the Flagler Club lobby, hors d’oeuvres, late night desserts, bar and complimentary chauffeured Tesla transportation,  my favorite amenities are the Jo Malone toiletries.
Can you tell I was on cloud nine by all the extras they gave us by upgrading our room?

There was even a private lounge and terrace that lifts you above the palm trees. Gorgeous views!

I highly recommend shopping on Worth Avenue. It’s the next best thing to Rodeo Drive, but much closer to home on the East coast. The lush landscaping mixed with high end shopping is perfect for enjoying a sunny day of window shopping and art gallery gazing. There are vias (smaller alleyways) branching off of Worth Avenue where you can find hidden boutiques and tucked away cafes. It’s also the birthplace of Lilly Pulitzer’s fashion empire.

We planned our budget to include a spa visit to The Breakers newly renovated spa. It was WORTH IT!! They spared no expense in creating this place. The snacks and drinks were so tasty too.  I’m wishing I would have taken more pictures. The lounging area with a fountain where mixed company can just relax was gorgeous.

After a couple of relaxing nights, we drove to Miami where we stayed at the Ritz Carlton Key-Biscayne. We wanted a view of the beach even though our plan was to drive inland each day for activities.

On Friday, we booked a private tour at the Zoological Wildlife Foundation. This was our second time visiting this conservation and it was our consolation prize (to ourselves) for not going to Africa. Our first visit in 2015 was so memorable we had to go back.

Tours range from $85-$700 and from 1 hour to 3 hours. The “special wildlife experience” is the premium tour and they provide you with all of your pictures they take of you and the animals. This is the tour we chose for both visits. We appreciated not having to have our phones out the entire time and we enjoyed our encounters with the animals. Also, since our last visit, I’m on their email list and get offers all the time for discounted tours. I would recommend signing up for their email list, if you are thinking of planning a visit. We definitely made some new, furry friends.
We didn’t want our experience with the wildlife to stop so be booked a last minute fishing charter with Top Gun Charters for our last full day. My husband LOVED this adventure, as he got a chance to fish for a trophy sport fish. He wants to catch a Marlin in Cabo someday, but he was over the moon to hook a sailfish off the Miami coast.IMG_4863
Interesting fact: by law, the first mate can take measurements of the sailfish, but it’s unlawful to lift it all the way out of the water. So through pictures and measurements, you can release the fish and then place an order to get an exact replica (built to the size of your fish) and shipped to your home about 4 months later.

He also caught a Jack Crevalle and King Mackerel.

On Sunday, we visited Vous Church led by Pastors Rich and DawnChere Wilkerson. They are famously known as the Pastors of Kim and Kanye West – even performing their wedding ceremony. However, their love for the city and passion for leading people to salvation is why we wanted to visit their church. It was the friendliest group of twenty and thirty year olds I have ever met in my life. The vibe of the church is very urban and appealing to the younger generation. If we lived in Miami, I would be there every week.
This trip to Palm Beach and Miami was a blend of luxury, adventure and rejuvenation for our 10th anniversary. Africa, we’ll see ya in 5. Thanks for reading!

Notes from Lauren: A great addition to this amazing trip would be adding a 4 day cruise on the Disney Magic!  It leaves straight out of Miami and returns back to Miami.
